The X-Large size is generally used on flagpoles higher than 80 Feet.

These winches are available for use on flagpoles with a butt diameter of 12 Inches or larger. These gearless winches utilize cast bronze internal brakes which release when a winch handle is inserted and rotational pressure is applied. The winch is locked at any position by removing the handle which engages the brake system.

The X-Large size is used on flagpoles higher than 80 Feet.

The winch is mounted to the inside of the flagpole with four 5/16 inches-18NC stainless steel bolts (bolts not included) with mounting centers being 3-1/2 inches.

Recommended stainless steel cable diameter is 1/8 inch.

Use and Care Instructions

The maximum recommended spool capacity (maximum length that can safely fit and wind onto the winch's rotating drum) is 135 feet of 1/8 inch cable. This includes a minimum of five dead wraps to always remain on the spool.

The X-Large Stainless Steel Flagpole Winch is designed to be used in flagpoles for raising and lowering flags securely. We recommend the use of a high-quality 1/8 inch cable to be used on the winch and that the correct handle be used as a means of raising and lowering the flag. We also recommend the use of high-quality light machine oil for lubrication; it is to be liberally added to the space between the brake drum and spool while rotating with the handle.

For proper cleaning we recommend that an experienced flagpole installation and maintenance company remove the winch from the flagpole, clean and re-install the winch. The winch can be cleaned by carefully using kerosene to flush the braking area while rotating with the handle. Once cleaned, drain excess kerosene. The winch should be re-oiled before being used.

Care should be used to assure that the four mounting bolts remain tight.

The screw in the spool that tightens against the cable end, or stop, must be the one provided with the winch; the length of this screw is critical. Use of a longer screw will disable the braking mechanism, and the winch will not function properly. The size of the cable end or stop is also important; if it is large enough to tighten against the axle when the screw is tightened, the braking system will likely malfunction. The axle is the tube that is visible by looking into the spool cable end slot, located near the screw.

Never operate the winch dry. Lack of proper lubrication is one of the main causes of malfunctions. Lubrication, or lack thereof, and the previously mentioned use of the wrong screw and or cable end are the cause of a majority of all issues that come to our attention.

The use of brake cleaner to clean the winch is not recommended, as it is extremely drying.

Never lubricate with anything that contains silicone.

Never use graphite to lubricate.

Use the proper handle to operate the winch.

Maintain a firm grip on the handle when it is installed in the winch.

Do not operate in windy, stormy weather or when lightning is possible.

Remove the flag before expected storms and high winds.
