A lit flag after dark is the whole point of owning a flagpole. Most solar flagpole lights get there badly — bolted to a bracket halfway up the pole, throwing light up at the flag from below and leaving the top half dark.

This one sits on top. It threads onto the ornament spindle above the truck, so the light points down the flag, not up at it. The whole flag is lit evenly to the header, there is no bracket on your pole, and no shadow across the field of stars. It also sends the light down instead of into the sky, which is better for your neighbors and in line with dark sky lighting principles.

Read this first: the battery is a yearly job

The battery needs replacing every 12 to 16 months. Every solar flagpole light on the market is the same in this respect, and most sellers put it in a footnote. We are putting it first, because it decides whether this is the right light for your pole.

If you have a telescoping flagpole, this is an easy product to own. Lower the pole, swap the battery, raise it again.

If you have a fixed in-ground pole, think it through. Changing a battery twenty feet up needs a lift, not a ladder. Some owners are fine with that once a year. How long does it stay lit?

Three to eight hours a night, depending on the season, your latitude and how much sun the panel got that day. A long June evening in Idaho runs it most of the night. A short overcast January day will not.

Anyone promising dusk to dawn every night of the year is quoting a summer number. What this light reliably does is illuminate your flag through the evening hours when people actually see it, and it satisfies the United States Flag Code requirement that a flag flown at night be properly illuminated.

One more honest note: solar LEDs are not as bright as mains-powered lighting. This is at its best where there is little competing ambient light — a rural property, or a yard away from streetlights. Under a bright streetlamp any solar light will look washed out.

Will it fit my flagpole?

Built for residential flagpoles 15 to 25 feet, and it works on telescoping poles, Homesteader poles and commercial poles up to 25 feet.

The center hole is 0.63 inches inside diameter and fits a standard 1/2 inch ornament spindle, which is what nearly every residential truck uses. It works with every truck style we sell except the ST series, which has no spindle to thread onto. It will not fit a 5/8 inch spindle.

Not sure what you have? If the ball on top of your pole unscrews from a threaded post, you are almost certainly on a 1/2 inch spindle. Unscrew the ball, thread the light on, done — no tools, no drilling, no wiring. The light sensor switches it on by itself at dusk.

It replaces your ornament. If you are attached to the ball or eagle currently up there, this takes its place. Plenty of owners keep the ornament in the garage and put it back for daytime events.

What the specification actually means

1,100 lumens. A 60 watt household bulb is about 800. Most flagpole solar lights sit between 200 and 800. This runs 200 separate 1 watt SMD 2835 LEDs — many small emitters rather than a few big ones, which is what spreads light across the whole flag instead of burning a hot spot into the middle of it.

7,200 mAh of LiFePO4. Two 3.2 volt 3,600 mAh cells. LiFePO4 is the chemistry used in solar storage and electric vehicles, chosen because it holds capacity in cold weather where ordinary lithium-ion fades. It still wants replacing yearly, but it performs better through an Idaho winter than the cells in cheaper lights.

5 volt 6.2 watt monocrystalline panel. Monocrystalline rather than the cheaper polycrystalline — it keeps charging on an overcast afternoon.

IP65. The 6 means fully sealed against dust. The 5 means it withstands water jetted from any direction: wind-driven rain, sprinklers, snow melt. It lives twenty feet up with nothing above it and is built for that.
