The Fort Moultrie Flag, also known as the Liberty Flag, has a rich history dating back to the American Revolutionary War. It was first flown in 1776 at Fort Sullivan, later renamed Fort Moultrie, in Charleston, South Carolina. The flag was designed by Colonel William Moultrie, the commander tasked with defending Charleston from British forces.

The flag featured a simple blue field with a white crescent in the corner, and the word “Liberty” inscribed on it. It symbolized the fight for independence and freedom during the early stages of the American Revolution. During the Battle of Sullivan’s Island in June 1776, this flag was flown proudly as Moultrie and his forces successfully repelled a British naval attack, marking one of the first major American victories in the war.

The Fort Moultrie Flag became a symbol of defiance and resilience, representing the courage of the early American patriots who fought for liberty against overwhelming odds. Today, it remains an enduring icon of the revolutionary spirit and the quest for freedom.
