Description

Ninety six square feet, on a forty to fifty foot flagpole outside a civic building, a campus, a large commercial site: that is the 8x12 foot flag, and it is bought on purpose, never by accident.

This is the Tennessee state flag at 8x12 Feet (96 square feet) in nylon, made in the United States and finished with a sewn rope and plated steel thimbles.

Built to the Tennessee flag specification

The Tennessee flag is set out in Chapter 498 of the Public Acts of 1905, at a proportion of three to five. It is a crimson field with three white stars in a blue circle, and a vertical blue bar bordered by white at the fly.

Designed by Colonel LeRoy Reeves of the Third Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, and adopted April 17, 1905.

What the statute here fixes is the design, the colors and the seal or emblem; it does not fix a size for an outdoor flag to hit. That is the position in most of the country, and it is the reason every manufacturer settles on the same standard sizes.

We reproduce that design faithfully, in the standard outdoor flag sizes the whole industry uses and that the states themselves buy. What matters on an outdoor flag is that the colors, the seal and the emblems are right, and they are.

The law that defines it, in its own words

Tennessee Code Section 4-1-301, subsection (a) reads:

(a) The flag or banner of this state shall be of the following design, colors and proportions, to wit: an oblong flag or banner in length one and two-thirds (1 2/3) times its width, the principal field of same to be of color red, but the flag or banner ending at its free or outer end in a perpendicular bar of blue, of uniform width, running from side to side, that is to say, from top to bottom of the flag or banner, and separated from the red field by a narrow margin or stripe of white of uniform width; the width of the white stripe to be one-fifth (1/5) that of the blue bar; and the total width of the bar and stripe together to be equal to one-eighth (1/8) of the width of the flag. In the center of the red field shall be a smaller circular field of blue, separated from the surrounding red field by a circular margin or stripe of white of uniform width and of the same width as the straight margin or stripe first mentioned. The breadth or diameter of the circular blue field, exclusive of the white margin, shall be equal to one-half (1/2) of the width of the flag. Inside the circular blue field shall be three (3) five-pointed stars of white distributed at equal intervals around a point, the center of the blue field, and of such size and arrangement that one (1) point of each star shall approach as closely as practicable without actually touching one (1) point of each of the other two (2) around the center point of the field; and the two (2) outer points of each star shall approach as nearly as practicable without actually touching the periphery of the blue field. The arrangement of the three (3) stars shall be such that the centers of no two (2) stars shall be in a line parallel to either the side or end of the flag, but intermediate between same; and the highest star shall be the one nearest the upper confined corner of the flag.

Subsection (b) makes it an offense to knowingly manufacture or sell a state flag that does not comply with this design, and subsection (c) requires every Tennessee flag to carry markings showing the correct way to fly it. Ours does.

What is on it and what it means

Reeves wrote it down himself. The three stars are the three Grand Divisions, East, Middle and West, bound together by the endless circle, an indissoluble trinity. The blue bar at the fly relieves the sameness of the crimson field.

What most listings get wrong

The three stars do not mean Tennessee was the third state after the original thirteen. Reeves rejected that reading personally, and it is still the most repeated claim about this flag. The bar at the fly is functional, so a limp flag still shows all three colors, not symbolic.

Where the Tennessee flag flies

Camping World in Sevierville flies a forty by eighty foot flag on a hundred and thirty foot pole. The City of Sevierville sued in 2025 because zoning caps poles at forty four feet. Well documented but not an adjudicated state record, and it is one of several identical installations nationwide.

Fly it on Tennessee’s birthday

Tennessee became the 16th state on June 1, 1796. Under the United States Flag Code as amended July 7, 1976, a state flag flown on the state’s birthday takes its place beneath the United States flag, and that day is the one date every year the Tennessee flag has an official reason to go up.

Nylon or polyester in Tennessee

Nylon statewide at Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga. Polyester where severe storm wind is highest.

For scale, the National Weather Service ultraviolet index forecast for Memphis on July 23, 2026 was 7 at solar noon, in the high band. That is the sun this flag has to survive.

This size, ninety six square feet, puts real load on a flagpole. On the exposed sites above polyester is not optional — it is the only sensible call, and the hardware needs to be rated for it.

You are looking at the nylon here, the right pick for the sheltered and moderate wind sites named above, for any house bracket, and for anywhere the flag gets brought in during storms. Two things make that case. It is light enough to move on the breeze most yards actually get rather than hang limp, and it dries fast, which keeps mildew away in a humid climate. What it trades away is ultraviolet durability — nylon’s amide bonds break down under ultraviolet light, losing strength and color faster than polyester, and it loses roughly a tenth of its strength while wet. For one of the exposed sites named above, the polyester version is the better fit.

One more consideration, learned by most people only after a repeat purchase: a nylon flag moves in conditions where polyester hangs still. If the flag needs to actually be flying — a calm morning, a holiday, a funeral, a ceremony — that is an argument for nylon even on a site where polyester would technically outlast it. A flag that just hangs there has failed just as much as one that frays.

The number most institutions rely on traces to the American Legion, which reports a roughly ninety-day expectation from the federal government for a flag flown daily sunrise to sunset, and about a quarter of that flown around the clock. Retailer experience puts nylon at three to six months daily, polyester at four to eight, and an occasionally flown flag at one to three years. These figures are practical guidance, not a warranty, and exposure will move them considerably.

How the 8x12 Feet is built

Six rows at the fly end, with zig zag stitched corners rather than straight seams — a straight seam at a corner opens up under sustained wind within a season.

The math comes to 96 square feet of nylon at roughly two ounces a square yard. In a thirty mile an hour wind, the fly end moves faster than the wind that is driving it, since the wave headed for the tip speeds up as it travels — which explains why the tip wears out first and why fly-end stitching count is worth checking on any listing.

Two people on the ground, two people at the flagpole: this size demands it. Ninety six square feet can knock you off balance in a gust while clipping it on alone.

Each lock stitch knots into the one beside it, so a broken thread stays broken right where it snapped instead of unraveling the whole seam. 6 rows is not 6 times the strength — it is 5 backups. A full-length nylon rope sewn through the heading, finished with two plated steel thimbles, carries most of the load rather than letting it tear at two points.

The flag material is commercial grade nylon. It is light enough to fly in a gentle breeze, it sheds water rather than holding it, and it dries fast, which matters because a flag that stays wet stays heavy and works its seams harder. The ink is UV resistant and field tested; sun is what takes a flag’s color, and the ink decides how long it holds.

A design that reproduces cleanly

A circle, three stars and a fly bar. No seal and no lettering, which is why it rates well and costs little.

For what it is worth, the North American Vexillological Association surveyed 72 state, provincial and territorial flags in 2001 and rated them from zero to ten. The Tennessee flag placed 14, at 6.98 out of 10.

What are the thimbles for? The rope sewn through the heading ends in two plated steel thimbles. The halyard snaps clip to the thimbles, so the pull runs through the rope along the whole hoist rather than tearing at two grommets.

Can an 8x12 foot flag fly around the clock? It can, on a lit flagpole, but a flag flown twenty four hours lasts roughly a quarter as long as one flown sunrise to sunset. Budget for that.

Why rope and thimbles carry most of the load

A single reinforced grommet sits at the center of the heading as a secondary attachment point, but concentrating ninety six square feet of pull onto grommets alone does not hold, which is why a rope runs the full length of the heading, spreading the load across the whole hoist and letting thimbles carry the attachment point. It costs more to build, but it is the only construction that survives at this size.

The proportion that makes both tables work is simple: length equal to roughly a quarter to a third of the flagpole’s height. Sitting between two sizes is common, and the choice there is really a trade between a flag that flies often and one that is seen from a distance.

Push the flagpole past a hundred feet and the same ratio still applies, but it stops being a simple lookup: the flag, the truck, the halyard, the foundation and the wind load need to be engineered as a unit, and skipping that step damages the flagpole before it damages the flag. A number of famous large flags deliberately break the rule of thumb, on an engineer’s word rather than a table’s.

About the back of the flag

A printed flag's reverse face is a mirror image of the front, and that is standard, not a fault — it describes most of the flags flown across the country. Double sided construction, which reads correctly from either face, sews two flags together with a liner and roughly doubles both weight and price. Single sided remains standard, and correct, unless a state's statute specifically calls for double sided.

Flying it with the United States flag

The rule comes from Title 4, Section 7 of the United States Flag Code: no flag is displayed above the United States flag, and none is placed to its right at the same level, which from the viewer’s position means the left. Equal-height flagpoles carry the United States flag on the viewer’s left with matching flag sizes; unequal flagpoles put it on the taller one; a single flagpole with two flags carries it at the top. Civilians face no penalty for departing from the Flag Code, but it is the standard institutions hold to.

Buy two and they both last longer

Buy two flags and swap them every month. That habit alone outlasts three flags flown into the ground, since the material recovers while resting and the fly end is not repeatedly stressed in the same place. Take the flag down for real storms; overnight wind damage can exceed six months of ordinary wear. Inspect the fly end rather than the middle, and a few minutes of repair stitching when fraying starts buys another season.
