Residential ends here. A 6x10 foot flag is sixty square feet of commercial flag for a commercial flagpole — and the last size still finished with grommets rather than a sewn rope.

This is the New Hampshire state flag at 6x10 Feet (60 square feet) in nylon, made in the United States and finished with brass grommets.

Built to the New Hampshire flag specification

The New Hampshire flag is set out in New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated 3:2, with the seal at 3:8. It is the state seal, showing the frigate USS Raleigh, a granite boulder, a laurel wreath and nine stars, on a blue field.

Adopted in 1909 and modified in 1931.

The law governing this flag addresses design, colors and the seal or emblem, but leaves overall size unspecified for a modern outdoor flag. That is typical across most states, which is why the industry has converged on the same standard sizes.

The law that defines it, in its own words

New Hampshire Revised Statutes Section 3:2 reads:

The state flag shall be of the following color and design: The body or field shall be blue and shall bear upon its center in suitable proportion and colors a representation of the state seal. The seal shall be surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves with nine stars interspersed. When used for military purposes the flag shall conform to the regulations of the United States.

The emblem itself is defined by reference to the state seal, so these words are the frame and not the whole picture.

What is on it and what it means

The Raleigh was one of the first warships of the Continental Navy and was built at Portsmouth. The nine stars mark New Hampshire as the ninth state. The granite boulder is the state’s granite.

What most listings get wrong

It is reported to be the only state flag whose seal contains the United States Stars and Stripes, though that claim traces to secondary sources rather than to the state itself, so we will not state it as settled.

Where the New Hampshire flag flies

New Hampshire's distinctive tradition is its own Hall of Flags in the State House, built 1816 to 1819, displaying the tattered battle flags carried by New Hampshire regiments from the Civil War through Vietnam. The flags first arrived in 1866 and moved into the State House in 1900, and their fragile condition has driven ongoing preservation debate. Sources on the collection are largely news and preservation group rather than an official state catalogue, and the count varies by source.

Nylon or polyester in New Hampshire

Nylon in the sheltered interior at Concord and Manchester. Polyester on the short coast and exposed summits. Mount Washington recorded a 231 mile per hour gust on April 12, 1934, long the fastest surface wind ever measured at a staffed weather station.

This is a commercial flag at sixty square feet, and on the exposed sites named above, material choice separates a one-season flag from a three-season one.

You are looking at the nylon here, the right pick for the sheltered and moderate wind sites named above, for any house bracket, and for anywhere the flag gets brought in during storms. Two things make that case. It is light enough to move on the breeze most yards actually get rather than hang limp, and it dries fast, which keeps mildew away in a humid climate. What it trades away is ultraviolet durability — nylon’s amide bonds break down under ultraviolet light, losing strength and color faster than polyester, and it loses roughly a tenth of its strength while wet. For one of the exposed sites named above, the polyester version is the better fit.

There is one more factor, and most people only discover it after buying the wrong material once: a nylon flag moves on days a polyester flag stays limp. If it matters to you that the flag is actually flying on a still morning, a holiday, at a funeral, at a ceremony, that favors nylon even where polyester would outlast it. A flag hanging motionless has failed at its job too.

Institutions commonly cite the American Legion’s figure: the federal government expects about ninety days from a flag flown daily sunrise to sunset, and roughly a quarter of that flown around the clock. On the ground, retailers report three to six months for nylon flown daily, four to eight for polyester, and one to three years for occasional flying. Take these as working estimates, not warranties — exposure can move them a long way in either direction.

How the 6x10 Feet is built

Six rows of lock stitching replace four at this size, because sixty square feet generates far more force at the fly end than any house flag experiences. Four rows would not hold.

Here is the arithmetic: 60 square feet of nylon at roughly two ounces a square yard. A thirty mile an hour wind sends the fly end moving faster than the wind itself, since the wave traveling toward the tip picks up speed as it goes — which is why the tip wears out first, and why the fly end's stitching count is the figure to check on any listing.

Two people and a clean, open surface are what this size needs for a proper fold. A tailgate will not do at sixty square feet.

Lock stitching means each stitch is knotted into the next, so a broken thread stops where it broke rather than unzipping the seam. 6 rows does not mean 6 times the strength; it means 5 backups. At sixty square feet, the heading takes the most sustained strain of any part of the flag, which is why it runs two inches of reinforced heavy duty white with brass grommets and tooth washers.

The material here is commercial grade nylon. Its lightness lets it fly on a gentle breeze, it sheds rather than absorbs water, and it dries quickly, sparing the seams the extra weight and strain of staying wet. Why this flag is harder to make than most

For what it is worth, the North American Vexillological Association surveyed 72 state, provincial and territorial flags in 2001 and rated them from zero to ten. The New Hampshire flag placed 63, at 3.18 out of 10.

Questions about the 6x10 Feet

What size flagpole for a 6x10 foot flag? Thirty to forty feet. At this size the flag is commercial and the flagpole has to be an in-ground pole with a truck and halyard.

Why does the 6x10 foot flag have grommets when the 8x12 foot flag has a rope? Sixty square feet is the most two brass grommets can be asked to carry. Above this the load is spread along a rope sewn the length of the heading.

Does a 6x10 foot flag need a heavier flagpole? A sixty square foot flag in a gust loads a flagpole hard. If the pole was sold for a 4x6 foot or 5x8 foot flag, check its rating before stepping up.

The last size on grommets

Past this size, construction shifts entirely to a sewn rope the length of the heading, since two grommets cannot carry the load any further. The 6x10 Feet sits exactly at that boundary — six rows of stitching, a two inch heading, and still grommets.

Underneath both tables is a single ratio: a flag a quarter to a third the flagpole’s height. When you land between two rows, that is a real choice, not a rounding error — smaller flies more often, bigger reads further.

Push the flagpole past a hundred feet and the same ratio still applies, but it stops being a simple lookup: the flag, the truck, the halyard, the foundation and the wind load need to be engineered as a unit, and skipping that step damages the flagpole before it damages the flag. A number of famous large flags deliberately break the rule of thumb, on an engineer’s word rather than a table’s.

About the back of the flag

Every printed flag looks right from one side and mirrored from the other, and that is simply how the overwhelming majority of American flags are built. Making both sides read correctly means building what is really two flags stitched together over a liner, at roughly twice the price and twice the weight. Single sided is the standard, and it is the right choice unless a state’s statute specifically requires otherwise.

Flying it with the United States flag

Governing this is Title 4, Section 7 of the United States Flag Code, which keeps the United States flag in the position of honor: never below another flag, never to the right of one at the same level, meaning never right of the viewer’s left. Two flagpoles at equal height put the United States flag at the viewer’s left with equal-sized flags; unequal heights put it on the taller pole; a single flagpole with two flags carries it at the top. No penalty attaches for private citizens under the Code, but it is what institutions follow as standard practice.

Buy two and they both last longer

Fly one for a month, then swap. Two flags rotated monthly will outlast three flags flown to destruction, because the fabric recovers when it rests and the fly end stops taking the same abuse in the same place. Take it down in severe weather; a flag left up through a real windstorm can take more damage in one night than in six normal months. And watch the fly end rather than the middle, because a few minutes with a needle when the fraying starts buys another season.
