Description
A 6x10 foot flag is where a flag stops being residential. Sixty square feet is a commercial flag on a commercial flagpole, and this is the last size finished with grommets rather than a sewn rope.
This is the District of Columbia flag at 6x10 Feet (60 square feet) in nylon, made in the United States and finished with brass grommets.
Built to the 1938 design
The District of Columbia flag was adopted by Congress on October 15, 1938, following a design competition run by the District Flag Commission. Three red five-pointed stars sit above two horizontal red bars on a white field. The design is an armorial banner, drawn directly from the coat of arms of George Washington's family, documented in England as early as the fourteenth century.
Unlike a state flag, the District's design was never written into a statute the way California's or Texas's was. Congress settled it by resolution after a 1938 commission selected artist Charles A.R. Dunn's proposal. There is no dimensional code to quote, which is why this listing does not carry a statute block the way our state flags do.
A common myth holds that the three stars represent the three branches of government. They don't. They are heraldic mullets, lifted from a five-hundred-year-old English family crest that predates the United States entirely.
We reproduce that design faithfully, in the standard outdoor flag sizes the industry uses. Read more about the district's founding and its flag on our blog: July 16, 1790: How Washington, D.C. Was Founded.
This is the size where fly-end stitching steps up to six rows instead of four, because sixty square feet generates far more force at the tip than any house flag experiences.
