What a flagpole counterweight does

On an internal halyard flagpole, the rope or cable that raises and lowers the flag runs down inside the pole itself, out of sight. A counterweight hangs on the bottom of that halyard loop and keeps it under constant tension. Without one, the halyard goes slack, slaps against the inside of the pole in the wind, and tangles at the cleat. With the right weight attached, the line stays taut, the flag lowers smoothly, and the flag itself hangs and flies properly instead of wrapping around the pole.

Will this size fit my flagpole?

This 7 Pound size is built for flagpoles in the 35 to 50 Feet range. Going lighter than your pole calls for leaves the halyard loose; going heavier is rarely a problem and can help in a consistently windy location. If you fly more than one flag, or fly an oversized flag for your pole height, the next size up is worth considering.

Choose black either to match a black anodized pole directly, or simply because a dark counterweight is less visible at the base of the pole than a bright one — a common choice on commercial and municipal installations where the hardware should not draw attention to itself.
