Description

The 26-star United States flag commemorates Michigan’s admission and the national star count used from 1837 to 1845.

26 Star U.S. Flag History

Michigan’s arrival in the Union gave the American flag its twenty-sixth star. The state was admitted on January 26, 1837, and the new constellation became official on July 4 of that year. It remained the national star count through July 3, 1845, when Florida’s admission prompted the next July transition. The U.S. Senate’s Michigan timeline records Michigan’s admission, while the Florida timeline identifies the following statehood milestone.

Michigan’s path to membership was shaped by a boundary dispute with Ohio. The conflict known as the Toledo War delayed admission and ended with Toledo remaining in Ohio while Michigan acquired the Upper Peninsula territory involved in the settlement. The resulting two-peninsula geography became one of the state’s defining features. The State of Michigan’s history overview explains this connection between the border settlement and statehood. The twenty-sixth star therefore recalls both an enlarged Union and the resolution of a disagreement over where a new state would begin and end.

The admission also brought Michigan into the work of the federal government. Lucius Lyon and John Norvell took their oaths as its first United States senators on January 26, the same day the state entered the Union. The Senate timeline records this immediate transition from territorial status to representation. On the flag, however, the visible change waited for Independence Day under the established rule for adding new stars.

The twenty-six-star constellation and thirteen stripes make the distinction between the original states and the expanded Union easy to see. Counting the stars gives this flag its place in the national sequence even without an accompanying date or state name. This is a national historical flag associated with Michigan’s statehood, not Michigan’s state flag. The historical association rests on the star count, without assigning this reproduction to a particular ship, regiment, maker, or surviving artifact.
