UK Union Flag: Which Way Is Up?
The quickest way to check a Union Flag is to find the edge that attaches to the pole, then look at its upper corner. In that corner, the broad white diagonal belongs above the red diagonal. The offset is intentional, so a design that looks neatly symmetrical can still be wrong. The Scottish Government’s flag-flying guidance identifies the broader white diagonal at the upper pole-side corner.
For a buyer or event organizer, that small detail is worth checking before the flag is installed. You do not need to memorize every part of the design. You need a clear view of the attachment edge and enough detail to distinguish the wide white section from the narrow one.
Start with the hoist rather than the left edge
The hoist is the attachment side of a flag. On a physical product, look for the heading, eyelets, clips, ties or sleeve rather than assuming that the left side of a photograph is the hoist. Ask for clarification if a product image crops that edge out.
A photograph taken from the opposite side can move the pole to the other side of the picture. That makes “white at the top left” an incomplete buying instruction. Use the upper corner nearest the actual pole as your reference. GOV.UK’s 2022 flag-flying notice states the same pole-side orientation rule; its mourning instructions were specific to that period and are not a current display calendar.
Review a proof before approving artwork
For printed signs, event graphics or a custom production proof, request a flat, uncropped view with the hoist marked outside the artwork. A waving mockup may be attractive, but folds can conceal the very detail you need to approve.
- Check the diagonals separately. Do not approve solely because the central red cross looks familiar.
- Keep the offsets. Ask the designer to preserve the supplied reference rather than visually “correcting” unequal-looking white spaces.
- Confirm the viewing side. If artwork is intended for two different faces, have each proof labeled instead of approving a single ambiguous thumbnail.
- Check the final crop. A correct source file is not enough if a template trims its corners or stretches it to fill a space.
Check the mounting plan before ordering
Separate the artwork decision from the hardware decision. Record where the flag will attach, which edge the product uses for attachment, and how it will sit when installed. A flag with eyelets and a flag with a sleeve may require different fittings; the national design alone does not tell you which product fits your equipment.
For an angled bracket, a wall display or a specially constructed banner, give the supplier a sketch of the installation. Do not assume that a standard product photograph answers a nonstandard mounting question. Ask for the finished size and attachment arrangement in writing.
A practical arrival check
Unfold the flag on a clean surface, identify the hoist and compare the upper pole-side corner with the approved proof. Photograph the full item and attachment edge if something appears inconsistent. Resolve a suspected artwork or finishing error before modifying the product or installing it somewhere difficult to reach.
These are purchasing and inspection suggestions, not a manufacturing tolerance or a promise about a particular product. For a formal occasion, also obtain the organizer’s current protocol. Correct orientation answers one important question; it does not settle flag precedence, permissions, mourning instructions or the suitability of a mounting location.
Once you have checked the orientation, compare our United Kingdom flags and confirm the selected flag's dimensions and attachment method.
Compare the 2 by 3 foot United Kingdom nylon flag with the 3 by 5 foot United Kingdom nylon flag, then check the selected item's attachments and included components for your display.
