Nepal's National Flag: Two Pennons, a Sun and a Moon
Nepal's flag can be recognized by its outline before either emblem comes into view. Two triangular pennons form one national flag, with a white moon above a white sun. Understanding that design begins with a useful distinction: describing the flag accurately is different from explaining what people believe its symbols mean.
The Constitution of Nepal supplies a precise description and a construction method. It does not turn every popular account of the flag's history into an official explanation. For a school presentation, cultural event or collection label, keeping those two kinds of information separate produces a stronger account.
What Article 8 actually identifies
The English text of the 2015 Constitution in WIPO Lex describes the upper moon emblem as showing eight rays out of sixteen and the lower sun as having twelve rays. Those details are part of the specified design, not decorative choices to vary in a classroom redraw.
“Two pennons” is a convenient way to talk about the silhouette. It should not suggest that a modern flag is necessarily supplied as two separate pieces, or that a particular retail product uses a specified stitching method. A constitutional design description and a product's physical construction answer different questions.
A drawing method, not a casual triangle sketch
Schedule 1 sets out a sequence for constructing the shape, moon, sun and border. It also distinguishes imaginary construction lines from marks that appear on the finished flag. A diagram used to work out the design therefore should not be mistaken for an extra-lined version of the national flag.
This matters when preparing a printed display. Stretching an illustration to fill a rectangular image box, trimming away a pennon or enlarging one emblem independently can change the design. Preserve the supplied artwork's proportions and leave space around its outline. If exact construction is required, consult the schedule rather than relying on a quick sketch or this explanatory article.
What can we say about the sun and moon?
The constitutional text identifies the emblems and their placement. That is a firm starting point. A claim about what the sun or moon represents requires a different kind of evidence: an attributed explanation from a reliable cultural, historical or official source.
Do not present a symbolic interpretation as a sentence from Article 8 unless it actually appears there. Nor should a reader be told that every Nepali person understands an emblem in exactly the same way. A national symbol can carry personal and cultural significance beyond the wording that defines its appearance.
A concise label can therefore explain the visible design without inventing an origin story: “Nepal's national flag combines two triangular pennons, with a white moon above a white sun on crimson within a deep-blue border.” If adding an interpretation, name the source and keep that statement separate from the description.
Choosing a flag for a real display
For a multi-country display, start with the country identity and the shape of the actual flag, then check the item dimensions and attachment finish. The FORTISVEX international flags collection provides country navigation for comparing listings. A nominal size alone does not establish the outline, proportions or included hardware of every item.
Before ordering, review the whole product image and description together. If the dimensions are ambiguous for a nonrectangular design, resolve that question rather than assuming how they were measured. Keep a display caption focused on Nepal and the documented design; equipment details belong in the purchasing decision.
The flag deserves more than a trivia label about its unusual shape. Its constitutional description provides a precise way to look at it, while careful attribution leaves room for cultural meaning without turning an attractive story into an unsupported fact.
