Choosing a Memorial Flag Case: Check the Flag Size First
A memorial flag case is a personal purchase, often for a flag that cannot be replaced. Before choosing a wood finish, establish which flag the case must hold. A triangular appearance alone does not tell you whether a case is the right size.
Start with the original flag dimensions
Look for the original label, presentation paperwork or an earlier order. A 3-by-5-foot flag and a 5-by-9-1/2-foot burial flag are different sizes. The oak memorial case listing discussed here offers separate size options for those flags. Selecting the correct option is part of ordering; the shared product name does not make the options identical.
If the flag is already folded and its original dimensions are unknown, do not unfold it merely to guess. Record the folded triangle's width, height and thickness without compressing it, and ask for the proposed case's usable interior dimensions. Exterior frame measurements alone cannot confirm the fit.
Compare the opening and usable interior
- Which unfolded flag size is the case designed to hold?
- What are the interior width, height and depth?
- How does the back or access panel open?
- Will the folded flag fit without forcing the closure?
- Is the flag included, or is the purchase for the case only?
A product photo may show a flag to illustrate the finished display. Do not interpret that photograph as an included item unless the description explicitly says so.
Choose the location before the finish
Decide whether the case will sit on a shelf or hang on a wall. Measure the available space and check the model's mounting provisions. Follow its instructions and choose wall hardware appropriate to the wall and assembled case; do not assume that a frame's appearance establishes how it should be mounted.
If the flag is historic, fragile or already deteriorating, ask a qualified textile conservator about suitable display materials and conditions. A glass front or an attractive wood frame does not by itself establish conservation-grade protection. Avoid making preservation guarantees based only on a product photograph.
Keep the order simple and specific
Write down the flag size, folded measurements if available, preferred display location and exact case model. If ordering as a gift, confirm those details with the recipient before selecting a finish.
Browse FORTISVEX memorial cases. The listed cherry-finish case for a 5-by-9.5-foot U.S. flag is one size-specific example, not a fit guarantee for every folded flag.
