Deary, Idaho: Railroad Beginnings and the 1923 Main Street Fire
Deary sits at the base of Potato Hill, locally known as Spud Hill, in Latah County. Its story is easier to follow when three different events are kept separate: selling town lots, incorporating a municipality and rebuilding after a fire. Together, those milestones explain more than a single “established” date on a sign.
A townsite connected to the railroad
The city’s historical account describes a railroad right-of-way survey toward Bovill in 1905 and accommodation for construction crews by 1906. It dates the first sale of Deary town lots to September 24, 1907. That sequence places the townsite within an existing landscape of settlement and work, rather than treating the sale as the beginning of every human activity here.
A separate 2014 narrative credited to the Latah County Historic Preservation Commission identifies the earlier name Anderson, the 1907 platting and a post office established that September. It gives 1912 as the incorporation year and identifies Deary as a stop on the Washington, Idaho and Montana Railway. The post office served the developing settlement before the incorporation date given in that account.
Text equivalent: 1907—first town-lot sale; 1912—incorporation; 1923—Main Street fire. The diagram shows event order, not a proportional time scale.
Main Street before and after the fire
The preservation narrative describes a community with churches, a school, a newspaper and sawmills by 1914. It records the 1923 fire’s destruction of the buildings on Main Street’s west side except the bank. The city history dates the fire more specifically to October. The bank was the exception to the destruction on that side of the street; the account does not describe the whole town as destroyed.
The city also records the opening of photographer Antone Lee’s studio on July 16, 1909. His postcards and portraits recorded people, places and events in the region, adding another kind of local enterprise to the town’s early years.
More than a railway stop
The city history describes several kinds of production around Deary. The Deary Lumber Company was established in 1909 to mill lumber independently. The Deary Clay Products Company made bricks first used in the First State Bank at Bovill, while the Farmer’s Union built warehouses that made Deary a grain-shipping point. Timber, brickmaking and farm produce connected the town to different customers and surrounding communities.
That activity did not mean easy business for everyone. The same account describes seasonal slowdowns: merchants who carried too much stock or extended too much credit could struggle through winter. Local logging contractors hired crews to cut timber along short spur lines into timbered drainages. Deary’s commercial life depended on both the work in the surrounding country and the businesses serving it.

Put the history to useful work
A classroom or community display could pair this three-event chronology with an Idaho flag and a short source list. Browse FORTISVEX’s Idaho state flags for a present-day display, checking the selected listing’s size and attachment details. If the display will also include a United States flag, compare American flags by material and check the individual listing for the intended setting. That is a modern interpretation, not evidence of which flag was flown at a particular Deary building in 1907. If extending the classroom display to compare towns in different states, use the state flag collection to identify each state alongside its own local-history panel.
Deary’s early story includes the railway, independent businesses and the farms and forests around them. The town-lot sale, attributed incorporation year and Main Street fire mark different stages of that history, rather than a single founding moment.
