New Jersey State Flags
History of the New Jersey State Flag
The flag of New Jersey consists of a buff-colored field with the state's coat of arms centered on it. The coat of arms is a shield with three plows, representing the state's agricultural tradition. Above the shield is a crest, which consists of a helmet, a horse's head, and a ribbon with the state motto, "Liberty and Prosperity," written on it. The flag was adopted by the state in 1896, and it is based on the design of the Great Seal of New Jersey, which was adopted in 1777.
