Montana State Flags
History of the Montana State Flag
The flag of the state of Montana consists of the state seal on a blue field. The state seal features a plow, a pick and shovel, and a smelter's torch, representing agriculture, mining, and industry. The flag was adopted by the Montana State Legislature on January 31, 1905. The seal on the flag is surrounded by the words "State of Montana" and "Oro y Plata," which is Spanish for "Gold and Silver." The flag was designed to reflect the state's history and its economic foundations. The blue field of the flag represents the state's natural beauty, particularly the blue skies and the mountains.
