Minnesota State Flags

Celebrate the North Star State with a Minnesota flag selected for the right design, size and mounting style. Minnesota entered the Union on May 11, 1858, as the 32nd state. For a present-day display or a historical collection, check the design shown on the individual product before ordering.

History of the Minnesota State Flag

Minnesota's current flag became official on May 11, 2024. A white eight-pointed North Star sits within a dark-blue shape suggesting Minnesota at the hoist, beside a light-blue field. This replaced the earlier seal-based flag, whose history began in 1893 and included revisions in 1957 and 1983. The Minnesota Secretary of State's announcement distinguishes the new flag from the retired design.

Choose the Design and Finish for Your Display

Compare the listed nylon sizes and attachment methods. The 3x5-foot Minnesota flag is listed with brass grommets, while the 8x12-foot listing uses rope and thimbles. A larger flag can require different hardware and places more load on the pole; follow the pole and hardware manufacturer's permitted flag size and wind-load limits rather than choosing by visibility alone.

If you want a retired seal-based design, specify the historical version and confirm its availability. For either a current or historical purchase, match the design in the listing to the version you intend to display.

Minnesota Flag Questions

Why did the older flag have 19 stars if Minnesota was the 32nd state?

The 19 stars represented the states added after the original 13: 13 plus 19 equals 32. They did not make Minnesota the 19th state. See the state's historic flag explanation.

Is the current North Star flag the same as the old state seal flag?

No. The current flag uses the star and two blue areas rather than the old seal, flower wreath and lettering. For a current-design purchase, confirm that the product image and description agree on that design.

What should I check before replacing a Minnesota flag?

Match the intended design and nominal size, then verify the attachment finish and your hardware's capacity. Grommets and rope-and-thimble finishes are distinct; do not assume every size mounts the same way.
