History of the Minnesota State Flag

The current design of the Minnesota state flag was adopted in 1957. It features a blue field with the state seal in the center, surrounded by a wreath of the state flower (the pink and white lady slipper). The state motto "L'Étoile du Nord" (The Star of the North) is written in white letters on a blue ribbon below the seal.

Before this design was adopted, the state of Minnesota had several other flags throughout its history. The first official Minnesota state flag was adopted in 1893 and featured a white field with a blue border. The state seal was placed in the center, surrounded by a wreath of blue and white flowers. This flag was used until 1911, when a new design was adopted.

The 1911 design featured a blue field with a golden sun in the center, surrounded by 19 golden stars representing Minnesota's place as the 19th state to join the Union. This design was used until 1957, when the current design was adopted.
