Maryland State Flags
History of the Maryland State Flag
The Maryland state flag features the coat of arms of the Calvert family, the original owners of the Maryland colony. The flag was adopted in 1904. The coat of arms is encircled by a black and gold pattern, which represents the Calvert family's motto, "Fatti maschii, parole femine," which means "Manly deeds, womanly words." The flag also includes the state motto, "Fatti maschii, parole femine," which is displayed on a scroll below the coat of arms. The flag is representative of Maryland's rich history and cultural heritage.
