Maine State Flags
History of the Maine State Flag
The Maine state flag features the state coat of arms on a field of blue. The coat of arms includes a farmer and a seaman, representing Maine's agricultural and maritime industries, respectively. Above the farmer and seaman is a moose, the state animal of Maine. The motto "Dirigo," which means "I direct" or "I lead," is displayed on a banner below the coat of arms.
The design of the Maine state flag was officially adopted by the Maine legislature in 1909. However, the coat of arms had been in use for many years before that, dating back to 1820 when it was included on the state seal. The current design of the flag has remained unchanged since it was first adopted.
