Indiana State Flags
History of the Indiana State Flag
The current design of the Indiana state flag was adopted on May 31, 1917. The flag consists of a gold torch in the center surrounded by 19 gold, five-pointed stars representing Indiana's place as the 19th state to join the Union. The stars are arranged in an outer circle around the torch, which represents liberty and enlightenment. The torch is surrounded by a blue field representing vigilance, perseverance, and justice. The flag also includes the state motto, "The Crossroads of America," written in gold letters on a blue ribbon below the torch.
The original state flag of Indiana was adopted on July 19, 1916 and consisted of a blue field with the state seal in the center. This flag was used until 1917, when the current design was adopted. The current design was created by Paul Hadley, a Hoosier artist who won a contest held by the Daughters of the American Revolution to design a new state flag.
