Georgia State Flags
History of the Georgia State Flag
The current design of the Georgia state flag has been in use since 2003. It features the state's coat of arms on a field of blue, with three red and white stripes below it.
Before this design, the Georgia state flag had gone through several changes. The first official state flag of Georgia was adopted in 1777 and featured the state's coat of arms on a field of blue. This flag was used until 1879, when the Georgia General Assembly adopted a new design that featured the Confederate Battle Flag in the canton (upper left corner) and three horizontal stripes of red, white, and red.
This flag was in use until 1956, when the Georgia General Assembly adopted a new flag that removed the Confederate Battle Flag and replaced it with a circle of 13 white stars representing the original 13 colonies. The rest of the flag remained unchanged.
This flag was used until 2001, when the Georgia General Assembly voted to adopt a new design, which was based on the state's first official flag from 1777. This new design featured the state's coat of arms on a field of blue, with three red and white stripes below it. This design was officially adopted in 2003 and has been in use since.
