Description

This is the size where a state flag leaves residential territory behind. Sixty square feet is commercial, flown on a commercial flagpole, and it is the last size built with grommets before rope takes over.

This is the Washington state flag at 6x10 Feet (60 square feet) in nylon, made in the United States and finished with brass grommets.

Built to the Washington flag specification

The Washington flag is set out in Revised Code of Washington 1.20.010. It is a dark green field with the state seal carrying a portrait of George Washington.

Adopted in 1923 and standardized in 1967.

Washington regulates by ratio rather than by size. WAC 434-04-017 sets a one to one point six flag ratio with seal diameters given for the 3x5 foot, 4x6 foot and 5x8 foot sizes, and the state runs a competitive bid to that specification. The law is written around the standard commercial sizes rather than against them.

We reproduce that design faithfully, in the standard outdoor flag sizes the whole industry uses and that the states themselves buy. What matters on an outdoor flag is that the colors, the seal and the emblems are right, and they are.

The law that defines it, in its own words

Revised Code of Washington 1.20.010 reads:

The official flag of the state of Washington shall be of dark green silk or bunting and shall bear in its center a reproduction of the seal of the state of Washington embroidered, printed, painted or stamped thereon. The edges of the flag may, or may not, be fringed. If a fringe is used the same shall be of gold or yellow color of the same shade as the seal. The dimensions of the flag may vary.

Washington Administrative Code 434-04-017 adds the sizing rule: identical seals on each side, a 19 inch seal on a 3x5 foot flag, 25 inches on a 4x6 foot flag, 31 inches on a 5x8 foot flag, and in all other cases a seal one third the flag length on a flag with a height to width ratio of one to one point six.

What is on it and what it means

The seal portrait is based on a Gilbert Stuart painting. The seal itself was designed in 1889 by the Olympia jeweler Charles Talcott.

Worth knowing about this flag

A bill directs a redesign recommendation by July 1, 2028, subject to referendum. Nothing has changed yet, and the green field with the Washington portrait remains the flag.

It is the only state flag with a green field, and the only one depicting a United States president.

Where the Washington flag flies

An eighty by forty foot flag flies on a hundred and twenty foot pole at a recreational vehicle consignment business in Burlington along Interstate 5. Regional rather than a claimed state record. A historic episode worth using: at Camp Lewis in Pierce County in 1918 a three hundred and fourteen foot Douglas fir pole and a sixty by ninety foot flag attempted a world record, and the pole broke.

Fly it on Washington’s birthday

Washington became the 42nd state on November 11, 1889. Under the United States Flag Code as amended July 7, 1976, a state flag flown on the state’s birthday takes its place beneath the United States flag, and that day is the one date every year the Washington flag has an official reason to go up.

Nylon or polyester in Washington

Nylon in the sheltered Puget Sound lowland at Seattle and the Spokane interior. Polyester on the Pacific coast and in the wind prone Columbia Basin.

Sixty square feet makes this a commercial flag, and on an exposed site from the list above, the right material is the difference between one season and three.

This is the nylon listing, suited to the sheltered and moderate wind sites named above, to any house bracket, and to anywhere you bring the flag in during storms. Two factors drive that choice. Nylon is light, catching the breeze most yards actually get instead of hanging still, and it dries quickly, which is what keeps mildew at bay in humid air. The cost is ultraviolet life: nylon’s amide bonds absorb and break under ultraviolet exposure, fading faster than polyester, and it loses about a tenth of its strength wet. On one of the exposed sites named above, look instead at the polyester version.

The part most buyers learn only the second time around: nylon flies in wind too light to move polyester. When it matters that the flag is actually moving — a still morning, a holiday, a funeral, a ceremony — that favors nylon even somewhere polyester would last longer. A flag that hangs motionless is not doing its job either, however durable it is.

The benchmark institutions generally lean on comes from the American Legion: the federal government's own expectation is about ninety days for a daily sunrise-to-sunset flag, and roughly a quarter of that flying around the clock. Retailers report three to six months for nylon flown daily, four to eight months for polyester, and one to three years for occasional flying. Treat those as working estimates rather than a warranty, since exposure can shift them a great deal.

How the 6x10 Feet is built

Six rows of lock stitching replace four at this size, because sixty square feet generates far more force at the fly end than any house flag experiences. Four rows would not hold.

Here is the arithmetic: 60 square feet of nylon at roughly two ounces a square yard. A thirty mile an hour wind sends the fly end moving faster than the wind itself, since the wave traveling toward the tip picks up speed as it goes — which is why the tip wears out first, and why the fly end's stitching count is the figure to check on any listing.

Two people and a clean, open surface are what this size needs for a proper fold. A tailgate will not do at sixty square feet.

With lock stitching, every stitch knots into its neighbor, so damage stays contained at the break instead of running down the seam. Read 6 rows not as 6 times the strength but as 5 backups. At sixty square feet, the heading takes the most sustained strain of any part of the flag, which is why it runs two inches of reinforced heavy duty white with brass grommets and tooth washers.

Nylon, commercial grade, is what this flag is made from. It is light enough to move in a gentle breeze, sheds rather than soaks up water, and dries quickly — a wet flag is a heavier flag, harder on its own seams. The ink is UV resistant and field tested, because sun exposure is what actually fades a flag.

Why this flag is harder to make than most

A recognizable human portrait printed on both faces of a green flag. It is the most expensive state flag to reproduce accurately, because a portrait that is slightly off does not look approximate, it looks wrong.

For what it is worth, the North American Vexillological Association surveyed 72 state, provincial and territorial flags in 2001 and rated them from zero to ten. The Washington flag placed 47, at 4.53 out of 10.

Will it fit my flagpole?

Questions about the 6x10 Feet

What size flagpole for a 6x10 foot flag? Thirty to forty feet. At this size the flag is commercial and the flagpole has to be an in-ground pole with a truck and halyard.

Why does the 6x10 foot flag have grommets when the 8x12 foot flag has a rope? Sixty square feet is the most two brass grommets can be asked to carry. Above this the load is spread along a rope sewn the length of the heading.

Does a 6x10 foot flag need a heavier flagpole? A sixty square foot flag in a gust loads a flagpole hard. If the pole was sold for a 4x6 foot or 5x8 foot flag, check its rating before stepping up.

The last size on grommets

This is the boundary: everything larger switches to a full-length sewn rope because two grommets cannot hold the load. The 6x10 foot flag runs six rows of stitching and a two inch heading while staying just inside the grommet range.

Which size do I need?

The rule behind both tables below is that a flag’s length should run about a quarter to a third of the flagpole’s height. Where two sizes both fit, the smaller one flies more often and lasts longer, and the larger one reads from further away.

The quarter to a third rule holds all the way up, but above about a hundred feet the flag and the flagpole stop being two purchases and become one engineered system: the truck, the halyard, the foundation and the wind load all have to be specified together, and a flag bought without checking the flagpole rating damages the flagpole first. Several famous installations deliberately fly longer than the rule, which is a choice made with an engineer rather than from a chart.

About the back of the flag

A single sided printed flag shows its design correctly on one face and reversed on the other. That is expected, and it describes almost every flag flying in the United States. A flag readable on both sides is built as two layers sewn around a liner, roughly double the cost and double the weight of a single sided flag. Unless a state’s law requires double sided, single sided remains the standard choice.

Flying it with the United States flag

Title 4, Section 7 of the United States Flag Code sets the rule: no flag flies above the United States flag, and none takes its place to the right at the same level, meaning the viewer’s left. Two equal-height flagpoles put the United States flag on the viewer’s left, with both flags matched in size. Unequal flagpoles put the United States flag on the taller one, and a single flagpole with two flags carries the United States flag at the top. Civilians are not bound by penalty under the Flag Code, but it remains the standard institutions follow.

Buy two and they both last longer

Fly one for a month, then swap. Two flags rotated monthly will outlast three flags flown to destruction, because the fabric recovers when it rests and the fly end stops taking the same abuse in the same place. Take it down in severe weather; a flag left up through a real windstorm can take more damage in one night than in six normal months. And watch the fly end rather than the middle, because a few minutes with a needle when the fraying starts buys another season.
