Description
A 4x6 foot flag is the first size that really needs a flagpole in the ground. It is too large for a standard house bracket, and that is the honest reason to step up to it rather than any question of appearance.
This is the New Hampshire state flag at 4x6 Feet (24 square feet) in nylon, made in the United States and finished with brass grommets.
Built to the New Hampshire flag specification
The New Hampshire flag is set out in New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated 3:2, with the seal at 3:8. It is the state seal, showing the frigate USS Raleigh, a granite boulder, a laurel wreath and nine stars, on a blue field.
Adopted in 1909 and modified in 1931.
This state's statute covers the design, the colors and the seal or emblem, and stops there — it sets no overall size for a modern outdoor flag to match. Most states take the same approach, which is exactly why every manufacturer builds state flags in the same standard sizes.

The law that defines it, in its own words
New Hampshire Revised Statutes Section 3:2 reads:
The state flag shall be of the following color and design: The body or field shall be blue and shall bear upon its center in suitable proportion and colors a representation of the state seal. The seal shall be surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves with nine stars interspersed. When used for military purposes the flag shall conform to the regulations of the United States.
The emblem itself is defined by reference to the state seal, so these words are the frame and not the whole picture.

What is on it and what it means
The Raleigh was one of the first warships of the Continental Navy and was built at Portsmouth. The nine stars mark New Hampshire as the ninth state. The granite boulder is the state’s granite.
What most listings get wrong
It is reported to be the only state flag whose seal contains the United States Stars and Stripes, though that claim traces to secondary sources rather than to the state itself, so we will not state it as settled.
Where the New Hampshire flag flies
New Hampshire's distinctive tradition is its own Hall of Flags in the State House, built 1816 to 1819, displaying the tattered battle flags carried by New Hampshire regiments from the Civil War through Vietnam. The flags first arrived in 1866 and moved into the State House in 1900, and their fragile condition has driven ongoing preservation debate. Nylon or polyester in New Hampshire
Nylon in the sheltered interior at Concord and Manchester. Polyester on the short coast and exposed summits. Mount Washington recorded a 231 mile per hour gust on April 12, 1934, long the fastest surface wind ever measured at a staffed weather station.
Twenty four square feet is where wind load starts to matter in earnest, and the verdict above carries more weight here than on a standard house flag.
You are looking at the nylon here, the right pick for the sheltered and moderate wind sites named above, for any house bracket, and for anywhere the flag gets brought in during storms. Two things make that case. It is light enough to move on the breeze most yards actually get rather than hang limp, and it dries fast, which keeps mildew away in a humid climate. What it trades away is ultraviolet durability — nylon’s amide bonds break down under ultraviolet light, losing strength and color faster than polyester, and it loses roughly a tenth of its strength while wet. For one of the exposed sites named above, the polyester version is the better fit.
One more consideration, learned by most people only after a repeat purchase: a nylon flag moves in conditions where polyester hangs still. If the flag needs to actually be flying — a calm morning, a holiday, a funeral, a ceremony — that is an argument for nylon even on a site where polyester would technically outlast it. A flag that just hangs there has failed just as much as one that frays.
Most institutions work from the same benchmark, reported by the American Legion: the United States government's expectation is roughly ninety days for a flag flown daily sunrise to sunset, and about a quarter of that for one flown around the clock. In practice, retailers report three to six months for nylon flown daily, four to eight for polyester, and one to three years for a flag flown only on occasions. These are working numbers, not a guarantee, and exposure can move them substantially either way.
How the 4x6 Feet is built
A 4x6 foot flag's larger area, over half again a 3x5 Feet's, catches more wind and stresses the fly end harder. That is why it carries four rows of lock stitching rather than fewer.
The arithmetic behind that: 24 square feet of nylon at roughly two ounces a square yard. In a thirty mile an hour wind the fly end of a flag this size travels faster than the wind itself, because the wave running out to the tip accelerates as it goes. That is why the tip wears out first and why the stitching count at that end is the number worth reading on any listing.
One person can still manage this, though the first attempt on a windy day makes the extra size obvious. Take it down before the storm, not in the middle of it.
A lock stitch ties into the stitch next to it, so one broken thread does not unzip the whole seam — it just stops. 4 rows is not 4 times the strength; it is 3 backups. An inch and a half of reinforced heavy duty white heading holds two solid brass grommets and tooth washers, carrying real load at twenty four square feet.
The flag material is commercial grade nylon. It is light enough to fly in a gentle breeze, it sheds water rather than holding it, and it dries fast, which matters because a flag that stays wet stays heavy and works its seams harder. The ink is UV resistant and field tested; sun is what takes a flag’s color, and the ink decides how long it holds.
Why this flag is harder to make than most

For what it is worth, the North American Vexillological Association surveyed 72 state, provincial and territorial flags in 2001 and rated them from zero to ten. The New Hampshire flag placed 63, at 3.18 out of 10.

Can I fly a 4x6 foot state flag with a 4x6 foot United States flag? Yes, and on two flagpoles of equal height that is the correct pairing, with the United States flag to the viewer’s left.
Where the step up starts to cost you
Stepping up from a 3x5 Feet to a 4x6 Feet is where a cheap build starts costing real money. The extra area means more force at the fly end and more load on the grommets, so a budget 4x6 Feet fails faster than a budget 3x5 Feet ever would. Construction stops being optional at this size.

Push the flagpole past a hundred feet and the same ratio still applies, but it stops being a simple lookup: the flag, the truck, the halyard, the foundation and the wind load need to be engineered as a unit, and skipping that step damages the flagpole before it damages the flag. A number of famous large flags deliberately break the rule of thumb, on an engineer’s word rather than a table’s.

About the back of the flag
A printed flag's reverse face is a mirror image of the front, and that is standard, not a fault — it describes most of the flags flown across the country. Double sided construction, which reads correctly from either face, sews two flags together with a liner and roughly doubles both weight and price. Single sided remains standard, and correct, unless a state's statute specifically calls for double sided.
Flying it with the United States flag
The rule comes from Title 4, Section 7 of the United States Flag Code: no flag is displayed above the United States flag, and none is placed to its right at the same level, which from the viewer’s position means the left. Equal-height flagpoles carry the United States flag on the viewer’s left with matching flag sizes; unequal flagpoles put it on the taller one; a single flagpole with two flags carries it at the top. Civilians face no penalty for departing from the Flag Code, but it is the standard institutions hold to.
Buy two and they both last longer
Buy two flags and swap them every month. That habit alone outlasts three flags flown into the ground, since the material recovers while resting and the fly end is not repeatedly stressed in the same place. Take the flag down for real storms; overnight wind damage can exceed six months of ordinary wear. Inspect the fly end rather than the middle, and a few minutes of repair stitching when fraying starts buys another season.
