History of the District of Columbia Washington DC Flag

The flag of Washington, D.C., is a banner of arms representing the capital of the United States. The flag consists of three red stars above two red bars on a white field. The three stars represent the three commissioners who serve as the executive and quasi-legislative branch of the government of the District of Columbia. The two red bars represent the states from which the District was created: Maryland and Virginia. The white field represents the federal government.

The flag was designed by Charles A.R. Dunn, who served as the first President of the District of Columbia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. The flag was officially adopted by the District of Columbia on October 15, 1938. It is flown at all District of Columbia government buildings and schools, as well as at the White House and other federal buildings in the city.
