Arkansas State Flags
History of the Arkansas State Flag
The current design of the Arkansas state flag was adopted in 1913. It features a red field with a white diamond in the center, and within the diamond is a blue star surrounded by 25 white stars. The blue star represents Arkansas as a member of the Union, and the 25 white stars represent Arkansas as the 25th state admitted to the Union. The red, white, and blue colors of the flag are the same colors as the American flag, and the diamond shape is a reference to the state's nickname, "The Diamond State." The design of the Arkansas state flag was created by Miss Willie K. Hocker of Wabbaseka, Arkansas, and it was chosen through a statewide contest held in 1912.
