Virginia State Flags

History of the Virginia State Flag

The current design of the flag of the Commonwealth of Virginia was officially adopted in February 17, 1861. The flag features the Seal of Virginia in the center, which includes the Latin motto "Sic Semper Tyrannis" (Thus Always to Tyrants) and the Roman goddess Virtus. The goddess is dressed as an Amazon, and is holding a spear in one hand and a sword in the other. Above her head is a small statue of Victory. At the bottom is the state's official motto "Virginia Est Patria Mea" (Virginia is My Homeland). The flag is also bordered with a blue field with a white fringe. The design of the state flag has remained largely unchanged since its adoption.
