Vermont State Flags

History of the Vermont State Flag

The current flag of the state of Vermont was officially adopted in 1923. It features the state's coat of arms on a blue field. The coat of arms, which is centered on the flag, includes a green pine tree, a cow, and sheaves of wheat. The cow represents Vermont's dairy industry, the pine tree symbolizes the state's forested landscape, and the wheat represents agriculture. Above the coat of arms is a red ribbon with the state's motto, "Freedom and Unity," written in gold letters. The flag was designed by a group of Vermont women led by Emma Richardson Eaton.
