History of the North Carolina State Flag

The current flag of North Carolina was adopted in 1885. It features a blue field with a white star in the center surrounded by a wreath of dogwood flowers. The word "North Carolina" is written above the star and the date "May 20, 1775" is written below the star. This date refers to the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, which was a document signed on May 20, 1775, that declared Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, to be an independent state.

Prior to the current flag, North Carolina had several other flags throughout its history. Some of these flags included the Guilford Courthouse Flag, which was used during the American Revolutionary War, and the Confederate Flag, which was used during the American Civil War.
