California State Flags

History of the California State Flag

The current flag of California was officially adopted by the state on February 3, 1911. It is based on the original Bear Flag, which was created during the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt and first flown in Sonoma. The flag features a white field with a single red stripe running horizontally across the center. In the top left corner is a grizzly bear, standing upright and facing left, with the words "CALIFORNIA REPUBLIC" written in all capital letters above the bear. The flag also includes a red star and a red bar with the words "EUREKA," which is the state motto, written in all capital letters. The flag is a symbol of California's independence and its history as a state.
